WHEN Serhan Ayhan picked up a $1 coin at the beach last week he was convinced it would be lucky.

That proved true yesterday when he used the $1 to buy a Mercury and won $6000 in the Mercury/Dragons Jackpot Scorecard competition.

``It's supposed to bring you luck if you find a coin on the ground," Mr Ayhan said.

``I found a $1 coin and thought this is going to be my lucky coin and kept it aside."

He put it on top of his computer table at home for a special day.

``I purposely didn't touch it, I was waiting for the right time," he said.

``Then again I didn't know it was the right time this morning, it was just a matter of not having the right change."

Mr Ayhan usually walks to a kebab shop at North Wollongong to buy the Mercury.

Yesterday, he only had a $50 note and ``could not be bothered carrying the change" so he took the lucky coin.

``The first time I used it, it brought me $6000," he said.

``I had this weird feeling it was going to happen."

Mr Ayhan said he intended to move to Queensland for a job opportunity and would spend the $6000 on a pre-move holiday there and a bit of shopping.
